Looking to upgrade my Pro Tools workstation. Any suggestions?
Right now, I’m running:
1. Pro Tools M Powered 7.4 on a quad 2.0 G5,
2. M-Audio Octane connected to an M-Audio ProjectMix interface i/o via lightpipe
3. Symetrix 528e voice processor (preamp)
4. Monitored through KRK V8
I’m not looking to invest in microphones right now, so what would be the next choice in terms of hardware upgrades/additions? Software and plug-ins are for later on (although I am already decided on getting digidesign’s music production toolkit to increase track count, sample rate, etc… unless somebody has another suggestion)
Should I get new pre-amps or new a/d converters? Or should I get a mixer seeing as the projectmix isn’t exactly a mixer. Yes, I’ve heard that true engineers can produce excellent results with whatever they have, so I guess what I’m asking is, what ESSENTIAL upgrade can I get, that will give me more room to be creative. Budget is around USD$1200
if i was using your setup i would get a decent rack mount compressor before upgrading pre-amps and DACs. Compression is probably the one effect where software is nowhere as good as hardware. it’s something you need on every track.
