music appreciation textbook
Where should I begin studying to better understand the compositional structure of classical music?

I’m interested in fugues, especially after reading Godel, Escher, Bach,
and whether a good analogy of the fugue structure could be achieved in some other medium, say, visually. The Wikipedia entry on fugues refers to a lot of terminology… “voices”, “dominant voice”, etc, but I’m rather an extreme beginner at all of this, so I’m still struggling with the notion of what it means to write something ‘in the key’ of something, for example. I’m also interested because reference to music appreciation came up in my Humanities textbook for a course I took this Summer and at the time I didn’t have the spare time to look up more information. The terms there were more broad, general terms such as “texture” and “color”. A few links to useful websites on music theory for beginners would be appreciated. I’ll try and google some myself, but the first place that came to mind to ask was here. Thanks!

Searching for online music creator software programs can be difficult. The web is crowded with music making software packages that aresound303066_mixing_desk geared for a variety of ability levels. And there is a wide variety of price tags as well. In my quest to find the best music making software, I’ve researched many of these “make your own music” offerings.
